Making a Mark

At St.Petroc's nursery, the term mark making is used to describe the patterns, lines and shapes that the children make to communicate. Mark making is a sensory and physical experience for the children to explore and is the early stage of writing. Staff value, encourage and celebrate all mark making that children do in the unit. Mark making opportunities are provided for pupils to use their hands, pencils, pens, crayons, chalks and a variety of large and small utensils can be used to make marks such as toothbrushes, forks, sticks, feathers, whisks, lolly pop sticks etc. Children are provided with opportunities to make marks in shaving foam, gloop, playdough, seeds, paint, mud, sand .etc.
