Writing

Writing is the painting of the voice - Voltaire

In FS2, the process of writing is first taught through developing gross and fine motor skills through activities such as dough disco, finger gym activities and ribbon work. Staff model writing at every opportunity, showing children writing for a purpose and breaking down the skills needed. Handwriting is taught using the Read Write Inc mnemonics, supporting children with a rhyme to know where to begin and finish their letters.

We also teach writing through engaging in the magical world of tales and stories through Greg Botril’s amazing, ‘drawing club’. Drawing club focuses on enriching language skills, developing fine motor skills and spending time together with the children. It takes us to a world full of imagination where anything can happen and very often, does! We have found that our children make exceptional progress through drawing club as well as the bonus of confidence and joy. Throughout the year, children will learn to write words, labels, captions, speech bubbles and simple sentences, all whilst going on true adventures. Drawing club is based on picture books, tales and animations and involves a short period of Time Together as a whole class followed by adventure time with the children, following their own ideas and creativity.
