PSHE

"The things that make me different are the things that make me... ME!"  -Piglet (A.A. Milne, Author)

INTENT

Our intention is that when children leave St Petroc’s School, they will do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society.  We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it.  At St Petroc’s School, our planned curriculum of learning opportunities and outdoor experiences, specifically promotes children’s personal, social and health development and helps them to grow as individuals and as members of families and communities both locally and globally.

PSHE is embedded in all that we do, providing our children with the knowledge and practical skills to make informed decisions on how to live healthy, safe, fulfilled, responsible lives which encourages spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development in an ever-changing world.  Through explicit teaching, pupils will be equipped to support others who are facing challenges as well as promoting an awareness of safeguarding themselves and others both mentally and emotionally using healthy coping strategies.  PSHE also enables all children to gain an understanding of the world they are growing up in, and learn how to live alongside, and show respect for, a diverse range of people.  At St Petroc’s, we actively promote the 9 protected characteristics in our curriculum and work to embed them into our ethos.  Our Relationships and Sex Education enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.

IMPLEMENTATION

At St. Petroc’s School, we have tailored the PSHE Associations’ ‘Programme of Study’ to suit our pupils, school and community; giving careful consideration to our school ethos and aims and our pupils’ needs.  Pupils develop their understanding of PSHE through question based learning.  We follow the PSHE Associations’ three core themes: Health and Wellbeing; Relationships; and Living in the Wider World.  Each year group covers content related to each theme every year, ensuring that a spiral programme is in place: one that revisits themes, gradually extending thinking, expanding knowledge and developing skills.  Every class has a PSHE floor book to evidence PSHE lessons and other PSHE learning.  PSHE learning comes in many different forms: through whole-class teaching, group activities, individual tasks, assemblies, outside speakers, discrete lessons, cross-curricular lessons and other activities that enrich our pupils’ experiences.

Our school environment reinforces the PSHE curriculum through questioning, vocabulary and discussion topics in our classroom floor books and on displays throughout school.  We encourage the children to adopt the school’s ‘Bring It’ values alongside the British Values.  Picture News develops the children’s understanding of current global issues as well as within their own community.  Pupils also have the opportunity to immerse themselves in different cultures and experiences through planned trips with our outdoor experts.  These are also developed through working with the local community, fundraising opportunities, visitor presentations and learning about national and international events.  All of these opportunities provide enrichment opportunities to contextualise learning.  PSHE plays an important part of school assemblies where children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured.  Pupils are taught using effective teaching to stay safe and healthy, and by building self-esteem, resilience and empathy.  Our PSHE programme tackles barriers to learning, raises aspirations, and improves the life chances of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged pupils.

IMPACT

By the time our children leave school, they will be able to approach a range of real life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life.  The children will also have an understanding of the importance of PSHE and British Values and the effects these can have on life both in and outside of school.

Our PSHE curriculum helps the children to understand how they are developing personally and socially.   It inspires children to become healthy, open minded and respectful citizens, equipped with the skills to approach many of the complex moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.  Our curriculum allows pupils to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society.  Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.  During their school career children will develop an understanding of the physical and emotional aspects involved with RSE at an age appropriate level.
