Number Work

“Mathematical experiences for very young children should build largely upon their play and the natural relationships between learning and life in their daily activities, interests, and questions.”

Ann-Marie Dibiase

Mathematical development is an essential life skill for children. Maths supports problem solving skills. improves spatial awareness and develops understanding of shape and measure. Staff in nursery support children to develop their maths skills through the use of number rhymes, cardinality of number, subitising and counting. Staff help children to develop number sense, which sets a strong foundation for furture learning in maths. Number sense allows pupils to understand, relate and connect numbers allowing them to think fluently about numbers.
